Gradle is hiring a Staff Backend Engineer to join Develocity, a toolchain observability and intelligence platform used by Netflix, Airbnb, Spotify, SAP, and hundreds of leading software organizations worldwide. Develocity helps teams achieve delivery excellence through deep observability, build and test acceleration, and AI-powered intelligence across the entire toolchain—supporting Gradle Build Tool, Apache Maven, sbt, npm, Python, and Bazel.
As an AI-native company, Gradle embeds AI at the core of its product and operations. Develocity encodes a decade of build and test expertise into a context engineering layer that serves as ground truth for AI agents to change code safely, with governance to attribute and gate changes at machine speed.
You will design, implement, test, deliver, and maintain Develocity features while owning ambiguous initiatives from discovery through production to proven impact. You'll surface scope and delivery risk early, write specifications that align multiple teams, and set standards in code quality, code reviews, and AI adoption. You'll dogfood what you ship, work directly with customers on product discoveries and rollouts, and participate in Develocity releases collaboratively.
You're an experienced Staff Software Engineer whose adoption of AI has changed the scale of what you take on. You've driven ambiguous initiatives to completion across teams, judge work by customer value and speed, and make consequential calls with pragmatism and without close guidance. You have a strong record delivering testable, evolvable, scalable backend architectures to production. You bring deep understanding of and interest in the automation domain, developer productivity, and AI agent productivity. You hold strong opinions, articulate them clearly, and change them when evidence warrants. You thrive in distributed teams and write concise documents that align stakeholders.
