Carbon Direct is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale the platform that powers carbon management, removal advisory, and climate strategy solutions for organizations worldwide.
In this role, you will own the full data journey through the platform—from ingestion pipelines through transformation services and APIs to customer consumption. You'll set technical direction, make architectural decisions with limited precedent, and ensure the platform remains robust and highly available as it scales. You'll work in an ISO 27001 and SOC 2 compliant environment where access control, data protection, and auditability are built in from the start.
Key responsibilities include designing and deploying backend services, data pipelines, and APIs; prototyping quickly to test hypotheses and hardening validated solutions for enterprise adoption; making sound architectural decisions that prevent customer-facing problems; flexing into DevOps and SRE work as needed; supporting developer experience for AI-empowered contributors from non-engineering backgrounds; and mentoring other engineers while driving cross-service initiatives.
You should bring extensive professional backend engineering experience with a proven track record of operating at staff level and setting technical direction independently. You demonstrate vertical ownership—carrying work from database schema through testing to production monitoring. You ship high-risk changes with rollback plans and proactive stakeholder coordination. You have infrastructure fluency (IaC, CI/CD, observability, incident response) and actively use agentic engineering tools in your workflow, with production experience deploying AI-augmented systems. You've built shared packages, tooling, and documentation that accelerated both engineers and non-engineers. You collaborate effectively across product, science, and customer-facing teams.
Bonus qualifications include experience in regulated environments (ISO 27001, SOC 2) and depth in production AI systems—durable execution for long-running agents, quantified reliability evals, scoped permissions through agent tool calls, and prompt injection defense. Genuine interest in carbon, climate strategy, and energy is a strong plus.
