Altruist is transforming the wealth management industry with an AI platform for financial advisors. We're seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join our Platform team during an exceptional growth phase.
In this role, you'll design, build, and scale robust backend systems and infrastructure tooling used across all product teams. You'll work on distributed, resilient services in AWS and Kubernetes environments, collaborating closely with engineering leadership, product managers, and cross-functional teams to solve challenging technical problems. The position offers significant autonomy for design and implementation while maintaining strong team collaboration.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and scale RESTful backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and Postgres
- Implement architectures for highly distributed and resilient systems in AWS/Kubernetes
- Mentor and guide teams in secure coding practices, performance, and resilience
- Employ automated testing to ensure high-quality code
- Contribute to shared infrastructure services benefiting all product teams
You bring 3+ years of experience building scalable backend services at B2B financial services, fintech, or SaaS organizations. Required skills include proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, microservices architecture, distributed systems, SQL (Postgres/MySQL), Docker, Kubernetes, and Helm. You're technically savvy, can quickly master modern tech stacks (Kubernetes, Kafka, Temporal, Snowflake), and demonstrate exceptional ownership and communication. Bonus experience includes AI/Claude best practices, AWS cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines (GitLab), and tools like Debezium and Temporal.
The role is hybrid with three in-office days per week at Culver City or San Francisco FiDi locations.
