Altruist is an AI-powered platform transforming wealth management by empowering financial advisors to grow their practices, optimize resources, and deliver superior client outcomes. The company is in an exceptional growth phase and seeking Staff Backend Engineers to join the engineering organization.
In this role, you will act as a technical leader and steward of engineering best practices, mentoring other engineers while owning systemic, cross-service problems end-to-end. Your impact will span multiple high-visibility, high-impact projects with a particular focus on security, scalability, and reliability of the platform that clients trust with their assets.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and mentor engineers, developing impactful solutions across the organization
- Own systemic problems from problem definition through design, implementation, and rollout
- Design, build, and harden identity and access management capabilities including authentication, authorization, RBAC, and OAuth/OIDC flows
- Strengthen AWS and cloud infrastructure, including security posture, configuration, and operational guardrails
- Improve database performance, security, and optimization across high-volume, transactional systems
- Harden APIs, services, and distributed systems against failure and abuse
- Drive production reliability through incident remediation, root cause analysis, and observability improvements
- Partner with the Security/CISO team to translate identified gaps into durable engineering solutions
- Build and scale services and user-facing web applications that are customer-centric, performant, and secure
This is a hybrid role with an expectation of being in the Culver City office three days per week.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 6+ years of software engineering experience building precise and scalable distributed systems with best engineering practices
- Primary backend engineering background with comfort working across the stack; core engineering background preferred over purely product-focused experience
- Proven track record of shipping meaningful work in security, scale, or infrastructure (this is a builder role, not a Security/AppSec role)
- B.A./B.S. degree in Computer Science or similar Engineering/Mathematics field (preferred)
- Technical aptitude with modern tech stacks: Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, AWS, Postgres, Kubernetes. Strong Java + AWS experience is a great anchor
- Domain exposure in fintech, payments, or other security-sensitive, highly regulated environments (a plus)
- Strong ownership mentality, superb communication skills, resilience, and creative problem-solving ability
