Coinbase is seeking a Senior Staff Technical Architect to design and own the core trading systems powering the Everything Exchange. You will architect the end-to-end trading platform, including the sequencer, low-latency connectivity and messaging fabric, order/execution management systems (OMS/EMS), multi-venue connectivity, and execution engines serving retail, prime, and wholesale brokerage customers.
Key responsibilities include designing low-latency, high-throughput systems for real-time financial products across institutional and retail markets; driving reliability and performance through SLO ownership, observability, and incident response; setting technical standards through code reviews and design guidance; reducing single-point-of-failure risks; and mentoring team members to build resilience. You will partner cross-functionally with Product, Risk, Security, and Compliance to translate technical vision into actionable roadmaps.
Required qualifications: extensive backend engineering experience with demonstrated ownership of complex, production-grade distributed systems; proven track record architecting end-to-end trading platforms (OMS, front/middle office, multi-exchange connectivity); deep proficiency in low-latency Java and high-throughput messaging frameworks (Aeron, SBE, or similar); hands-on ability to design, build, deploy, and support 24/7 systems processing billions in daily transactions; experience in regulated or financial environments where correctness, auditability, and low-latency performance are critical; and demonstrated ability to make user-facing product decisions balancing engineering trade-offs with end-user quality through shipped products. Experience with generative AI tools for workflow efficiency is valued.
Coinbase is a remote-first company with quarterly in-person "surge" sessions for intensive collaboration. The role offers significant ownership of mission-critical infrastructure at scale.
