Coinbase is building the future of institutional trading as part of the Everything Exchange, powering systems that enable the world's largest financial institutions to trade across markets with speed, depth, and trust. As a Sr. Staff Technical Risk Architect on the Trading team, you will design, build, and own the real-time risk engine at the heart of a unified trading platform. You will architect cross-asset user and portfolio risk evaluation in real time on the core trading system serving Retail, Prime, and wholesale brokerage customers. This is a rare opportunity to architect risk infrastructure from the ground up with startup-level ownership and Coinbase's scale. Key responsibilities include: - Own the architecture of the real-time, cross-asset risk and margin engine, including user and portfolio modeling, multifactor and borrow risk, and cross-portfolio evaluation at scale - Design low-latency, high-throughput risk systems that maintain correctness and performance as the trading platform grows - Drive reliability and performance by owning SLOs, observability, and incident response for risk-critical systems - Set technical standards through code reviews, design reviews, and architectural guidance - Mentor engineers and reduce single-point-of-failure risk across the team - Partner cross-functionally with Product, Trading, Financing/Credit Risk, Security, and Compliance to translate technical vision into roadmap Required experience includes extensive backend engineering with demonstrated ownership of complex, production-grade distributed systems. You must have a track record architecting cross-asset risk systems (crypto, equities, FCM, or derivatives) with real-time, cross-portfolio evaluation at scale. Deep proficiency in low-latency Java and high-throughput messaging (Aeron, SBE, or similar) is essential, along with experience designing event-driven, high-availability systems. Experience with multifactor and borrow risk, margin, or clearing in regulated financial environments where correctness, auditability, and low-latency performance are critical is required. You should have delivered projects end-to-end and demonstrated ability to balance engineering trade-offs with end-user quality through shipped products.
