Salary: USD 253,895 - 298,700 / annual
Coinbase is building the future of institutional trading as part of the Everything Exchange, powering systems that enable the world's largest financial institutions to trade across markets with speed, depth, and trust. As a Senior Staff Technical Architect on the Trading team, you will design, build, and own the core trading systems that power Coinbase's institutional and retail offerings.
You will own the architecture of the end-to-end trading platform, including the sequencer, low-latency connectivity and messaging fabric, order and execution management systems (OMS/EMS), multi-venue connectivity, and execution engines. Your responsibilities include designing low-latency, high-throughput systems for real-time financial products serving institutional and retail markets, driving reliability and performance through SLO ownership, observability, and incident response where correctness and latency are non-negotiable.
You will set the technical bar through code reviews, design reviews, and technical standards, paying down technical debt that matters most. You'll reduce single-point-of-failure risk across the trading stack and build team resilience through mentorship of other engineers. Cross-functional partnership with Product, Risk, Security, and Compliance teams will be essential to translating technical vision into roadmap execution.
Required experience includes hands-on architecture of complex, production-grade distributed systems processing billions of dollars in daily transactions. You must have a track record of architecting end-to-end trading platforms (OMS, front/middle office, multi-exchange connectivity), not just single components. Deep proficiency in low-latency Java and high-throughput messaging frameworks (Aeron, SBE, or similar) is essential, along with experience designing event-driven, high-availability systems. You should have delivered projects end-to-end: scoping, architecture, implementation, monitoring, and iteration. Experience in regulated or financial environments where correctness, auditability, and low-latency performance are critical is required. You will have demonstrated ability to make user-facing product decisions that balance engineering trade-offs with end-user quality through shipped products.
