Help Scout is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Search and Data Services team. This role focuses on building and scaling the next generation of Help Scout's large-scale search and reporting infrastructure that powers critical capabilities for over 12,000 businesses worldwide.
You will own the design and implementation of systems handling thousands of transactions per second, managing large, frequently changing datasets. Key responsibilities include building a streaming data reports pipeline, improving search relevancy and data indexing, optimizing cost control for high-throughput event-driven systems, and evolving infrastructure to reliably scale 10x beyond current load.
In your day-to-day work, you'll build new features, improve existing systems, and evolve data pipelines with strong focus on scalability, testing, and maintainability. You'll participate in the full development lifecycle from design and implementation decisions through testing strategies and backlog prioritization. You'll collaborate across engineering through code reviews and architectural discussions, provide engineering support for escalated customer issues, and occasionally participate in hiring and interviewing.
The tech stack includes Kotlin, Java, JavaScript, and PHP for development; Elasticsearch, ClickHouse, Kafka, Flink, RabbitMQ, MySQL, and PostgreSQL for data infrastructure; and AWS ecosystem for cloud services. Knowledge of these specific tools is not required but is a nice bonus.
You are a passionate backend engineer (Java/Kotlin preferred, full-stack experience a bonus) who thrives on building scalable, maintainable, easy-to-read software. You take real ownership across the full development lifecycle, from early design through production monitoring. You care deeply about production readiness including automation, reliability, resilience, monitoring, alerting, and logging. You're collaborative, supportive, enjoy sharing knowledge and mentoring, and communicate clearly in written and spoken English for effective remote collaboration.
This is a fully remote position with a requirement for at least 4 hours of overlap with Central European working hours. US Eastern or Central Time zones are typically the best fit.
