Rula is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Patient Services team and architect the high-throughput, distributed platform serving as the single source of truth for all patient data. This is a critical role during a period of hyper-scale, where you will lead the technical strategy for re-engineering core backend data systems to be massively scalable, resilient, and fault-tolerant. You will tackle complex distributed systems challenges where system performance, uptime, and data integrity directly impact real human lives seeking mental healthcare. The role involves driving zero-to-one architectural decisions during a pivotal growth phase while acting as both a technical leader and force multiplier for the team. Beyond designing foundational infrastructure, you will mentor high-performing engineers, establish operational rigor, and partner directly with product managers and cross-functional teams to shape both the engineering roadmap and product vision. Required qualifications include 4+ years of professional experience, expertise in building distributed and event-driven systems, microservice development, and cross-functional collaboration. You should be fluent in AI-assisted development tools and have experience mentoring others, reviewing architectures, and establishing design patterns. Preferred qualifications include a Computer Science degree or equivalent, on-call experience with sustainable operational improvements, early-stage or high-growth startup background, and prior work on high-reliability systems (finance, healthcare, mission-critical). Experience with Node.js and Kafka is a plus. Rula is a remote-first company currently hiring across most U.S. states (excluding Hawaii). The company is Series C-funded and focused on making mental health care accessible and evidence-based. Full-time employees receive comprehensive benefits including medical/dental/vision, 401(k), generous time-off with two company-wide shutdown weeks annually, paid parental leave, home office stipend, and wellness programs.
