H1 is building a platform to democratize access to healthcare information globally, using data and AI to unlock medical insights that improve patient outcomes and accelerate equitable drug development. The MCU Engineering team delivers the scalable platform capabilities powering H1's products—services, APIs, event-driven systems, and user experiences that transform complex healthcare data into fast, reliable, intuitive tools for life sciences organizations.
As a Senior Software Engineer on MCU, you will own complex product capabilities end-to-end: from technical design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support. You'll work across the full stack, making architectural decisions, solving distributed systems challenges, and partnering closely with Product, Design, and fellow engineers to shape technical direction.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning features end-to-end with minimal guidance, from design through production support
- Developing and optimizing APIs, backend services, and distributed microservice architectures
- Designing PostgreSQL schemas, queries, indexes, and performance tuning for large-scale applications
- Building and troubleshooting Kafka-based event-driven systems (producers, consumers, consumer groups, replay strategies, failure recovery)
- Developing and optimizing Elasticsearch indexes and search queries for high-volume workloads
- Deploying and supporting applications in Kubernetes (Helm charts, CronJobs, autoscaling, troubleshooting)
- Contributing to AWS cloud infrastructure and Spark/EMR data workflows
- Building full-stack applications with React frontends and NestJS backends
- Participating in architecture discussions, design reviews, and code reviews
- Translating business requirements into scalable technical solutions
- Continuously improving system reliability, observability, scalability, and operational performance
You are a senior engineer comfortable with complex technical problems and architectural ownership. You thrive working across frontend and backend, balancing technical tradeoffs, and delivering high-quality software with autonomy. You mentor teammates through technical leadership, collaborate cross-functionally, and embrace continuous learning as the platform evolves.
