Zscaler is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer to join the Zero Trust Exchange control plane team in San Jose. This hybrid role (3 days/week in-office) reports to the Manager of Software Engineering and focuses on designing and delivering highly scalable, resilient, and secure control plane platform services. You will lead the architecture and design of large-scale distributed systems that power Zscaler's Zero Trust Exchange platform. Key responsibilities include driving complex cross-team technical initiatives, aligning stakeholders on architecture and execution plans, and identifying/resolving system bottlenecks and reliability risks. You'll set technical standards through design reviews, code reviews, and mentorship of senior engineers, while evaluating emerging technologies—including AI-assisted workflows—to improve developer productivity and system intelligence. The ideal candidate brings 3+ years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in distributed systems, microservices architecture, API design, and operating highly available services in production. You should have strong proficiency in Java, Go, or Python, proven experience leading complex technical initiatives across multiple teams, and solid understanding of cloud-native technologies, observability, and reliability engineering. Experience with AI-forward engineering practices, developer copilots, intelligent automation, or ML/LLM-powered capabilities is a plus. You operate with ownership mentality, thrive on complex technical challenges, collaborate at high trust, embrace a growth mindset, and champion simplicity in distilling complex problems. Zscaler values impact over activity, constructive debate, customer obsession, and execution-focused delivery in a high-performing culture.
