GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized Physical AI company building Factory SuperIntelligence through autonomous robotic systems deployed in active production. The Government Projects team designs and deploys six-axis robotic systems, robot transporters, and end-of-arm tooling for manufacturing applications in restricted government environments.
As Senior Robotics Design Engineer, you will own robotic manufacturing cell design end-to-end, from customer requirements through structural validation. You'll collaborate with software and mechatronics teams to optimize for reachability, cycle time, and efficiency. Key responsibilities include:
- Design and iterate six-axis industrial robot hardware, including robot transporter mechanisms on rail systems, motion systems, and end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) built for production deployment.
- Develop 3D CAD assemblies in SolidWorks and manufacturing-ready 2D drawings at expert level.
- Perform structural analysis and simulation to validate design integrity before field deployment.
- Prototype hardware with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles using 3D printers and CNC machines.
- Lead mechanical risk assessments and ensure compliance with ISO 10218-1/-2, ISO/TR 20218-1, and ANSI/A3 R15.06 safety standards.
- Own selection of electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic hardware components; maintain accurate Bill of Materials in PDM systems.
- Manage relationships with external machine shops and component suppliers to protect quality, lead time, and cost.
- Mentor junior engineers and travel to customer sites to validate systems in the field.
Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; 5+ years of robotic system design and integration experience with six-axis industrial robots; expert-level SolidWorks proficiency; familiarity with motion control systems and industrial facilities. Must be U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee and maintain work authorization throughout employment due to export control requirements.
Preferred: 10+ years experience; industrial robot transporter design (Preston-Eastin or Güdel tracks); sensor integration and 3D vision systems; manufacturing environment background; 6DOF robot programming for surface finishing; defense or government industry experience.
