Grover, founded in 2015, is a European leader in device subscription and circular economy solutions, enabling consumers and businesses to access over 1,000 tech items on flexible terms while refurbishing and recirculating devices to reduce e-waste.
You will join the Risk Engineering team as a Senior Backend Software Engineer, reporting to the Engineering Manager. This is a core technical role in a small, senior team that owns risk decisioning systems end-to-end. You will work closely with risk analysts, data scientists, and product teams to balance approval rates while managing fraud and default risk across four European markets for both consumer and business customers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and maintaining the risk decisioning platform: the rule engine, experiments, and decision APIs (FastAPI, GraphQL federation) that process every Grover order in real time
- Developing new risk products, from design through production, including dynamic pricing and counter-offer systems
- Integrating with credit bureaus, identity verification, fraud detection, and AML providers, with resilience when third-party vendors experience outages
- Designing event-driven workflows on Kafka for decisions, manual review, ID verification, and bank-account checks, ensuring correctness under retries, duplicates, and race conditions
- Creating tools for risk analysts, including manual review interfaces and LLM-powered risk assistants on AWS Bedrock
- Owning reliability and observability: Datadog monitoring, on-call rotations, runbooks, and removing legacy technical debt
The role is based at Grover's Berlin headquarters with a hybrid arrangement: 40 hours per week, onsite 3 days per week (Tuesday–Thursday).
Requirements:
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience with Python as your primary production language
- Hands-on experience with event-driven systems (Kafka or equivalent) and PostgreSQL
- Proven ability to design REST and/or GraphQL APIs and integrate third-party APIs
- Track record of owning services in production: on-call responsibilities, cross-service debugging, and monitoring
- Comfortable with AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, and Terraform
- Strong communication skills; ability to explain technical trade-offs clearly to non-engineers and adapt when priorities shift
Bonus qualifications: fintech, payments, lending, fraud, or credit-risk domain experience; rule engines or ML systems in production; LLM tooling; Rust, Rails, or Vue; German language skills.
