Salary: USD 160,000 - 200,000 / annual

The Product Engineering team is lean and works closely with Product to evolve Pinwheel's offerings with maximum customer value. The team balances four workstreams: customer support, roadmap delivery, proactive product improvement, and operational maintenance. This is a high-velocity environment where you'll have direct impact on products used by hundreds of millions of consumers.
In your first six months, you may work on projects including: building the Bill Switch product to drive account primacy through subscription migration; contributing to a new API version that formalizes product direction; improving the tax product for the upcoming tax season; refactoring legacy code; building a new customer dashboard API; and creating integrations with banking platform partners.
Your core responsibilities include deeply understanding customer needs and designing systems to solve them; building, scaling, and evolving data models, services, and systems powering APIs; designing and shipping impactful functionality focused on back-end APIs; maintaining and improving the Python-based microservice stack; creating tooling and engineering standards; and mentoring engineers to help the team grow.
This role is hybrid, requiring 3 days per week in the NYC office. The position does not offer visa sponsorship.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience building and maintaining back-end or full-stack applications, with expertise in data modeling, application logic, and API design
- Prior experience working at an early-stage startup or small tech company
- Deep expertise with modern back-end languages/frameworks (e.g., FastAPI, Django, Rails, Gin)
- Working experience with modern frontend web frameworks (React, Vue, etc.)
- Key implementation roles in projects with multiple teams and engineers
- Excited by working closely with customers
- Responsible use of AI tools on top of fundamental skills
- High bar for technical quality and commitment to continuous improvement
