Salary: USD 135,000 - 165,000 / annual
Aspen Neuroscience, a leader in autologous stem-cell therapies, is seeking a Senior Automation Engineer to join their team in Torrey Pines, San Diego. This role focuses on developing, improving, maintaining, and operating complex custom automation systems in a biotech manufacturing environment.
Key responsibilities include understanding system requirements and operational scenarios for various automation platforms; developing scripted protocols that align with biological process needs; supporting system integration across hardware and software components; developing and implementing verification and validation plans with functional testing to ensure regulatory compliance; troubleshooting and identifying root causes of automation failures where uptime is critical; creating and maintaining engineering documentation and system specifications; ensuring compliance with industry standards, FDA regulations, and internal quality processes; and collaborating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to ensure successful project delivery.
Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Biomedical, Computer, Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering; minimum 5 years' experience in hardware design, automation, or biotechnology. Essential skills include strong automation engineering knowledge (principles, algorithms, system architecture); excellent problem-solving and engineering intuition; proficiency in C# codebases and experience with integration and testing of automated systems; hands-on experience with robotics, motion platforms, controls, sensors, and machine vision; excellent communication and collaboration abilities; strong attention to detail and process discipline; and familiarity with GxP principles and FDA regulations (21 CFR Parts 11, 210, 211, 820).
Desirable experience includes knowledge of mechanical systems (statics, dynamics, motion control), electronic systems integration, electric motor control, and machinery safety protocols. The position requires on-site presence in Torrey Pines with flexibility for weekend and holiday work as needed. Some cleanroom access is required. This is an indoor role involving extended desk time, computer work, and occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds. Valid work authorization is required; visa sponsorship is not available.
