Salary: USD 100,000 - 140,000 / annual
Oklo is seeking an Environmental Specialist to support environmental compliance, field oversight, permitting coordination, procedure development, and environmental stewardship activities associated with nuclear and industrial development projects in southeastern Idaho.
You will work closely with construction, operations, licensing, engineering, and regulatory teams to ensure environmental compliance across active project sites and related field activities. This role requires significant field presence and direct interaction with contractors, regulators, and internal stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing regular meetings with partners such as Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) and the Department of Energy Idaho (DOE-ID)
- Tracking documentation related to environmental authorizations, approvals, and permits for projects in Southeast Idaho
- Conducting environmental field inspections and compliance assessments at active project and construction sites
- Interpreting environmental requirements and supporting implementation of environmental compliance programs, permits, and site procedures
- Monitoring internal Oklo teams and contractor compliance with environmental requirements and best management practices (BMPs)
- Overseeing stormwater, erosion and sediment control, dust control, spill prevention, and waste management
- Coordinating environmental monitoring activities including water, air, soil, and waste tracking
- Preparing and maintaining environmental reports, inspection logs, permit documentation, and corrective actions
- Identifying environmental compliance issues and implementing corrective actions
- Assisting with spill response activities, investigations, and follow-up actions
- Interfacing with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies
- Coordinating with engineering, construction, procurement, and operations teams to ensure environmental requirements are incorporated into project planning
- Tracking and communicating environmental compliance risks and emerging issues
- Supporting environmental audits, readiness reviews, and corrective action programs
- Maintaining environmental documentation systems and records
- Participating in field walkdowns, project meetings, and environmental planning discussions
- Traveling periodically to project and operational locations within Idaho and surrounding regions
- Promoting environmental awareness and continuous improvement initiatives
The ideal candidate is highly organized, field-oriented, technically capable, and comfortable operating in dynamic construction and industrial environments with high standards for safety and documentation. Strong technical writing skills are essential for producing technical procedures supporting Oklo's environmental stewardship and compliance requirements.
Oklo is developing fast fission power plants to deliver clean, reliable, and affordable energy at scale; establishing a domestic supply chain for critical radioisotopes; and advancing nuclear fuel recycling. The company was the first to receive a site use permit from the U.S. Department of Energy for a commercial advanced fission plant and submitted the first custom combined license application for an advanced reactor to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Note: This position may involve access to information subject to U.S. export control laws. Only applicants who meet the definition of a U.S. person under applicable laws may be eligible. Onboarding requires two weeks in-person at headquarters in Santa Clara, CA. Remote employees must travel to headquarters twice quarterly for team meetings and company events.
**REQUIREMENTS:**
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Ecology, or a related technical discipline
- 3+ years of experience supporting environmental compliance, construction environmental oversight, industrial operations, or related field activities
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and permitting requirements including: Clean Water Act, stormwater permitting, spill prevention and response, hazardous waste management, and air quality and environmental compliance programs
- Experience performing environmental inspections and documenting findings
- Strong technical writing and reporting skills
- Ability to work safely in active industrial and construction environments
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally as needed
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and field conditions
- Must reside in southeastern Idaho or be willing to relocate to southeastern Idaho
**BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:**
- Experience supporting large infrastructure, energy, industrial, or nuclear projects
- Familiarity with NRC, DOE, or other nuclear regulatory environments
- OSHA 30 certification
- HAZWOPER training
- Experience with erosion and sediment control programs
- Experience with environmental management systems or compliance tracking tools
- GIS, data analysis, or environmental monitoring experience
- Experience coordinating with contractors and regulatory agencies
