Auror is a 12-year-old company headquartered in New Zealand, working with major retailers globally to combat organized retail crime—a $150 billion problem. The company uses technology and intelligence to reduce violent retail crime, with an ambitious mission to cut it by 50% in 5 years. Auror is expanding its recognition technology portfolio, including License Plate Recognition (LPR) and Auror Subject Recognition (ASR), and is now seeking a Solutions Engineer to drive adoption of these new capabilities.
This is a customer-facing technical role spanning pre-sales engineering, proof-of-concept design, and ongoing technical advisory. You will be the technical subject matter expert who translates customer needs into technical solutions, stays engaged through deployment, and serves as the escalation point for new implementations. You'll work with skeptical IT managers and retail operations teams alike, maintaining composure and thinking on your feet to demonstrate product capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
**Pre-Sales Engineering:** Join sales calls as the technical expert for LPR and ASR, handling product deep-dives and technical objections. Run discovery sessions to understand customer environments and integration requirements. Scope solutions accurately, identify risks early, and produce technical documentation including integration guides and hardware compatibility requirements. Deliver tailored demonstrations to technical and non-technical audiences.
**Proof-of-Concept Design:** Design PoC scope and success criteria in partnership with the Technical Project Management team. Track and report PoC outcomes, synthesize findings for stakeholders, and feed learnings back into future pitches.
**Customer Technical Advisory:** Serve as a trusted technical advisor on system architecture, data handling, privacy, and integration. Guide existing customers through expansion requirements—new camera rollouts, additional stores, environment changes—covering placement, network configuration, lighting, and data flows. Translate customer technical requirements into briefs for Product and Deployment teams.
**Cross-Functional Collaboration:** Work with Product to surface recurring objections and capability gaps. Partner with Customer Success on clean handoffs from PoC to live use. Act as the sales team's technical backup. Feed field insights into sales enablement and product positioning. Build strong relationships with the Technical Project Management team.
You will report to Jon Briegel, Director of Solutions Engineering.
Auror provides the software layer for these technologies but requires customers to procure correct hardware (cameras, servers, etc.). This role must explain the end-to-end solution, required hardware for the customer's environment, and effective implementation pathways.
**Requirements:**
- Hands-on experience in technical pre-sales, solutions engineering, or technical implementation with facial recognition, LPR, CCTV, or physical security technology. Experience with facial recognition or subject recognition is a strong advantage.
- Comfortable discussing IT infrastructure at a high level and assessing how technology fits into existing customer environments. Ability to flag practical requirements like Linux fundamentals or mobile device compatibility.
- Structured problem-solving approach: gather information methodically, identify root causes, avoid jumping to solutions.
- Comfort with ambiguity and ability to prioritize across multiple concurrent customers and opportunities.
- Take privacy and ethical use of technology seriously; confident discussing data handling, retention policies, and responsible AI.
- Self-starter who improves systems around you—fix documentation gaps and address repeated questions.
- Working understanding of retail case management software and how Auror drives value through risk detection.
