Candescent is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the architectural vision and evolution of its check imaging platform within a modern, AI-powered SaaS ecosystem serving financial institutions. This is a strategic, cross-functional role responsible for defining platform architecture, driving modernization of imaging services into a unified extensible architecture, and ensuring scalability, security, resilience, and cost optimization.
Key responsibilities include: defining and driving platform architecture strategy focused on scalability, modularity, security, and resilience; leading imaging services platform consolidation and modernization; championing architecture best practices including domain-driven and event-driven design, and cloud-native principles; defining architecture and technical requirements for third-party components (OCR/recognition technology, check/document scanners); partnering with Product Management and Professional Services on configurations, environments, documentation, and customer onboarding; collaborating with Product, Engineering, and Data teams to embed AI/ML, analytics, and personalization; defining and enforcing standards for API governance, system design, observability, and security; evaluating emerging technologies; and collaborating with InfoSec, SRE, and DevOps on reliability, compliance, and operational health.
The role involves creating and maintaining architectural artifacts (solution blueprints, dependency maps, design specifications), collaborating with Portfolio and Product leadership on strategic alignment, establishing technical standards and policies, providing technical leadership through mentoring and code reviews, managing architectural risks and dependencies, and communicating a clear technology roadmap to evolve the imaging platform to newer technologies with secure, supported software stacks.
Required qualifications: 14+ years of software engineering and enterprise architecture experience; familiarity with edge device integration for data and image acquisition and network architecture topologies for cloud or on-premises connectivity; experience with fintech and banking standards (ISO 20022, Open Banking, FDX, ANSI X9.100-187-2021, CPA Standard 015); strong understanding of cloud-native technologies.
