Sanity.io is building an AI-powered Content Operations platform used by companies like SKIMS, Figma, Riot Games, and Anthropic. We're seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and grow the SDK team, responsible for building and maintaining the App SDK—a framework of typed React hooks enabling developers to build real-time content applications on Sanity.
The App SDK is the primary way developers extend Sanity beyond the Studio. Your team owns core primitives (useDocuments, useDocument, useEditDocument) and underlying tooling (Groq.js, Typegen, CLI, HTTP client), plus authentication, permissions, and real-time sync. The project is open-source (MIT-licensed), so work happens publicly.
In this player-coach role, you'll lead strategy, roadmap, and execution alongside product and design partners. You'll spend most time on people, priorities, and delivery while staying close enough to code to review PRs, unblock hard problems, and guide API design. You'll also shape the broader Engineering organization culture alongside other managers, product designers, product managers, and principal engineers.
Key responsibilities include: leading and growing an engineering team with focus on career development and impact; owning strategy and roadmap in collaboration with product and design; setting technical direction for a large-scale TypeScript codebase; designing minimal, beautiful APIs for internal and external developers; staying hands-on through technical reviews and code contribution; running an effective open-source project with community trust; championing developer experience (type generation, hot reload, one-command deploy); measuring adoption metrics; and collaborating across engineering, product, design, DevRel, and partnerships.
You bring 3+ years of engineering leadership and 5+ years as a software engineer. Deep expertise in TypeScript and React (state management, hooks, module systems, bundling, browser concepts) is essential. Experience with Go, Vite, or Zustand is a plus. You've built libraries, SDKs, or developer tools that other engineers depend on and understand the difference between shipping applications and toolkits. You've worked at product/SaaS companies as an engineering manager or senior engineer, collaborated closely with product and design, and are comfortable with remote/distributed teams. You communicate technical designs clearly in writing and verbally, are pragmatic about shipping, and have empathy for both your team and end-user developers.
Ideal candidates have maintained meaningful open-source projects, experience with API/SDK design at developer platforms, strong opinions on AI-assisted development's impact on SDKs, experience with automated browser testing and Node.js, and startup background.
