Gusto is seeking a Software Engineering Manager for the Money Movement team, a core Payments Engineering group responsible for reliably moving money at scale across multiple payment rails (ACH, wires, real-time payments, checks, international, and stablecoin). The Money Movement team owns Gusto's payment infrastructure, partner bank integrations, payment APIs, bank data ingestion, and routing logic that optimizes for speed, cost, geography, and regulatory compliance. The team also builds operational tooling for Payment Operations to manage payment lifecycle events.
In this role, you will directly manage and empower a team of engineers, supporting their growth and technical development. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Design, Data, Payment Operations, Accounting, and Treasury to build payments infrastructure that Gusto's 500,000+ small business customers can trust with their payroll.
Key responsibilities include: developing the engineering team and expanding Gusto's payment rails domestically and internationally; leading technical strategy and execution of next-generation payment capabilities; recruiting, hiring, and onboarding engineers; removing roadblocks and ensuring on-time delivery; owning reliability, efficiency, compliance, and cost-effectiveness of tier-1 payment systems with on-call responsibility and defined SLOs; driving the modularization of payments into a standalone service with clean API contracts; fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration; and maintaining strong cross-functional relationships to make tradeoffs that build customer trust.
You'll be expected to contribute hands-on where needed—reviewing code and coding to support the team's progress—while also providing strategic guidance. The role requires comfort navigating complex, ambiguous problem spaces and a willingness to debate and commit to decisions.
