Salary: USD 210,000 - 234,000 / annual

Muon Space is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead the flight software team responsible for building the platform that operates flight and payload systems for on-orbit LEO satellites. The team owns core software, services, and tools implementing flight operations including communications, telemetry, power management, sensor and payload operation, and system orchestration. In this role, you will develop the people, processes, and technical direction needed to deliver scalable, reliable systems that convert customer intent into safe and efficient on-orbit operations. You will collaborate closely with customers, ground platform teams, and mission operations to implement robust, flexible, and scalable solutions. Key responsibilities include leading and mentoring a software engineering team focused on core flight software development; defining team goals and technical roadmaps aligned with company priorities; ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance of mission-critical production services; translating mission needs into clear requirements and technical specifications; driving engineering best practices including design reviews, code quality, testing, and observability; managing team capacity, staffing, and growth through hiring, coaching, and performance development; and promoting a culture of technical ownership, continuous improvement, and pragmatic delivery. Required qualifications: BS/MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent industry experience); 5+ years of software engineering experience with 2+ years managing software engineering teams building production systems; significant experience developing in C++, Python, or Rust; strong technical background in embedded systems (RTOS and/or Linux); demonstrated experience building and operating mission-critical products with uptime, reliability, and performance requirements; experience defining technical direction and driving execution through a team; and strong communication skills working with cross-functional stakeholders. Nice-to-have qualifications include experience in aerospace, robotics, or domains with real-time scheduling, planning, resource allocation, and critical operations, as well as Rust development experience. The position is hybrid, requiring three days per week on-site in the San Jose, CA office. Muon Space, founded in 2021, is an end-to-end space systems provider designing, building, and operating LEO satellite constellations delivering mission-critical data for climate monitoring and national security applications.
