Okta is seeking a founding Engineering Manager to lead and bootstrap the Core Frontier team in Bengaluru. This is a people leadership role focused on building a high-caliber engineering team from the ground up while maintaining hands-on technical involvement.
The Core Frontier team sits at the intersection of product innovation and customer experience, responsible for translating sophisticated features developed across the Core Identity organization into seamless, intuitive user journeys. You will serve as the champion for coherent product experience, bridging complex internal logic with polished customer-facing results.
Key responsibilities include:
- Hiring and onboarding a high-performing team in Bengaluru while establishing operational rhythms and engineering culture
- Partnering with global engineering leaders across Europe and North America to maintain security and reliability standards
- Collaborating cross-functionally with Product, Security, Design, Architecture, and QA teams
- Managing team health, delivery, and individual contributor growth through coaching, 1:1s, performance reviews, and ceremonies
- Adapting engineering processes to keep the team agile and high-performing
- Remaining hands-on by participating in code reviews, architectural discussions, and contributing to the codebase outside critical paths
- Prioritizing roadmap work with stakeholders and providing technical clarity
Required qualifications:
- 10+ years total experience, including 3+ years of engineering management preceded by 5+ years as an individual contributor
- Experience leading teams building highly reliable, secure, and scalable distributed systems
- Passion for coaching engineers at various career stages with a track record of fostering technical growth
- Ability to communicate effectively and build trust across time zones and functions
- Systematic approach to technical and organizational challenges with strong ownership
- Desire to remain technically capable and contribute to development and architectural strategy
Nice-to-have skills include experience in Identity and Access Management (IAM), Node.js, AWS stack, and designing secure public-facing APIs.
