Okta is seeking a founding Engineering Manager to lead and bootstrap the Core Frontier team in Bengaluru. This is a people leadership role focused on building a high-performing engineering team from the ground up while maintaining hands-on technical involvement.
The Core Frontier team sits at the intersection of product innovation and customer experience, responsible for translating sophisticated features developed across the Core Identity organization into seamless, intuitive user journeys. You will serve as the champion for coherent product experience, bridging complex internal logic with polished customer-facing results.
Key responsibilities include:
- Hiring and onboarding a high-caliber engineering team in Bengaluru, establishing technical standards and engineering culture
- Leading cross-functional collaboration with Product, Security, Design, Architecture, and QA teams across global offices
- Adapting engineering processes to keep the team agile, healthy, and high-performing
- Prioritizing roadmap work with stakeholders and providing technical clarity
- Managing people activities: coaching, 1:1s, performance reviews, and team ceremonies
- Owning team health, delivery, and direct reports' growth and performance
- Remaining hands-on through code reviews, architectural discussions, and codebase contributions outside critical path
Required qualifications:
- 10+ years total experience, including 3+ years of engineering management preceded by 5+ years as individual contributor
- Experience leading teams building highly reliable, secure, and scalable distributed systems
- Passion for coaching engineers at various career stages with track record of fostering technical growth
- Effective cross-timezone and cross-functional communication skills
- Systematic approach to technical and organizational challenges with strong ownership mindset
- Ability and desire to remain technically capable and contribute to development and architecture
Nice-to-have skills include experience in Identity and Access Management (IAM), Node.js, AWS stack, and designing secure public-facing APIs.
