Flock Safety is seeking a Software Engineering Manager to lead the Fleet team, which owns the internal tools, web services, alarms, and status-tracking platforms that monitor the health of Flock's live device network nationwide. This is a player-coach role split between 60% people management and 40% individual contribution. You will lead a team of software engineers, supporting their career growth, managing sprint execution, and driving high-performing team dynamics. You'll drive technical strategy, roadmap planning, and microservices design across device monitoring, alerting, and internal health tools. The role requires hands-on coding in TypeScript, Node.js, and React to deliver real-time dashboards, web services, and robust APIs. You'll build and manage containerized applications using Docker, Kubernetes (via Helm), and AWS managed services (S3, API Gateway, SQS). This is not a hands-off administrative role—you will actively review code, contribute to the stack, and solve complex architectural challenges alongside your team. You'll work cross-functionally across multiple engineering and operations teams to solve high-visibility, mission-critical scaling problems. Required qualifications include a proven track record leading or mentoring software engineers with a focus on team growth and constructive feedback. You need strong hands-on coding ability with TypeScript/Node.js for backend services and modern frontend frameworks like React. Solid SQL database experience and hands-on familiarity with AWS and container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm) are essential. A strategic mindset with experience designing microservices and managing dependencies is required. Practical comfort using modern AI-assisted engineering tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude, Cursor) to optimize team velocity is valued. Flock is a 1,700-person company backed by over $1B in funding, building public safety technology. Last year they supported over 1 million criminal investigations and helped locate more than 10,000 missing people. The company prioritizes candidates in Atlanta and Boston for hub-based roles but this position is open to remote work across the US.
