Neo4j is seeking experienced backend engineers to join the team developing the distributed aspects of the Neo4j graph database platform. The role focuses on building critical enterprise features including high availability, distributed consistency, horizontal scalability, and deployment flexibility.
Day-to-day work spans the full database stack, from low-level efficient IO systems (where every flush and allocation matters) to high-level distributed control planes requiring predictability and stability. You will build features end-to-end, from core database implementation through deployment and maintenance in Neo4j's managed service, Aura. Responsibilities include collaborating with support engineers on complex bug investigations, working with SREs on the database-as-a-service offering, and partnering with product managers and cross-functional teams on feature design.
You'll also dedicate time to learning, experimentation, and specialization in areas of interest while contributing to team and product growth. The role requires working within a flexible, geographically distributed organization and communicating effectively about complex technical topics.

REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work independently within a flexible software development organization
- Ability to communicate about and collaborate on complex topics
- Experience with distributed systems (through usage, administration, or development)
- Desire to learn modern, high-performance Java programming (or prior knowledge)
- Desire to learn Kubernetes and building operators
- Willingness to work as part of a geographically distributed team
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience building stateful distributed systems (databases, message brokers, stream processing systems)
- Experience with distributed orchestration systems such as Kubernetes
- Existing knowledge of Java programming, the Java ecosystem, or JVM internals
- Experience working on large codebases
