Tailscale is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Strategic Projects team, a group focused on demonstrating why Tailscale should be the default connectivity substrate for both internal infrastructure and customer-facing product embedding. Reporting to the Engineering Manager and ultimately the Chief Strategy Officer, you'll work on initiatives like Aperture, an identity-aware LLM gateway.
This is an AI-native team that leverages coding agents as force multipliers. You'll be expected to be a power user of LLMs and agents while maintaining the high bar on code quality, security, and operational rigor that customers demand.
Key responsibilities include partnering with product-minded engineers from prototype conception through production hardening; co-owning the journey from "works in a demo" to "stable in production"; establishing and maintaining review, testing, and security practices for agent-generated code; working directly with reference customers on integrations; and closing the long-tail gaps—edge cases, regressions, flaky behavior, missing tests—that separate prototypes from dependable products.
You should have strong experience taking software from prototype to production in startup-like environments. Go experience is required, along with comfort integrating third-party APIs and basic networking knowledge. Heavy daily use of coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) and a point of view on where they accelerate work and where they fail is essential. You'll thrive collaborating closely with exploratory engineers, working independently in a remote environment, and adapting to the fast-moving cadence of a strategy team where priorities shift with market signal but the production bar stays high.
Light travel (<10%) is required, primarily for team and company onsites, with optional conferences or customer visits concentrated in North America.
