Tailscale is hiring a Software Engineer for its Strategic Projects team, a group focused on demonstrating why Tailscale should be the default connectivity substrate for organizations and developers. You'll report to the team's Engineering Manager and ultimately to the co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer.
This is an AI-native team that heavily leverages coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) as force multipliers. The role bridges the gap between rapid prototyping and production-grade software. You'll work shoulder-to-shoulder with product-minded engineers from idea conception through to dependable product, owning the journey from "works in a demo" to "stable in production."
Key responsibilities include: partnering with engineers to shape prototypes (MCP gateways, LLM proxies, sandboxes, remote servers) with production-readiness built in; co-owning hardening, error handling, observability, and operational tooling; establishing and maintaining review, testing, and security practices for agent-generated code; working with reference customers on integrations for both internal adoption and product embedding; and closing the long-tail gaps—edge cases, regressions, flaky behavior, missing tests—that separate prototypes from dependable products.
You should have strong experience taking software from prototype to production in startup environments, with Go as a must-have skill, comfort integrating third-party APIs, and basic networking knowledge. Heavy daily use of coding agents and LLMs is essential, with a clear point of view on where they accelerate work and where they fail. You'll thrive collaborating closely with exploratory engineers, working independently in a fully remote environment, and adapting to the fast-moving cadence of a strategy team where priorities shift with market signal but the production bar stays high. Light travel (<10%) is required for team onsites and optional conferences/customer visits in North America.
