MatX is building custom chips optimized for training and serving large language models, spanning silicon design through compilers and kernels. The Chip Simulators team is seeking software engineers to design and develop cycle-accurate simulations of MatX's custom hardware, playing a critical role in hardware-software co-design and enabling early development of the full software stack. In this role, you will design and implement a Rust-based chip simulator that models MatX's custom hardware with cycle-accurate precision. You'll collaborate closely with multiple internal teams including architecture, verification/validation, compiler, and runtime teams to ensure the simulator meets their needs. Working alongside hardware architects, you'll build models that directly shape silicon design decisions. You'll also develop tooling and infrastructure to support efficient correlation, debugging, and testing workflows, leveraging AI development tools to accelerate your work. You should have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent, with strong Rust skills (or genuine interest in ramping up quickly). You need outstanding software engineering fundamentals with emphasis on maintainability and performance, plus a solid foundation in computer architecture. Excellent cross-functional communication is essential given the collaborative nature of the role. Bonus qualifications include experience writing cycle-accurate simulators, deep knowledge of ML accelerator architectures, experience benchmarking and optimizing Rust code, familiarity with processor/memory/networking architectures, and understanding of power/performance/cost tradeoffs. This is a hybrid role requiring three days per week in the Mountain View office (Tuesday-Thursday), with flexibility to work remotely Monday and Friday. The company offers comprehensive benefits including health/dental/vision insurance, 4 weeks PTO, parental leave, professional development stipend, 401k matching, and various wellness perks.
