Applied Intuition is seeking a Software Engineer to design and develop the world representation layer for Axion, their advanced simulation stack powering autonomous systems across automotive, defense, and robotics domains. This is a deeply technical role at the intersection of computational geometry, real-time world modeling, and large-scale multi-agent simulation.
You will own the foundational scene and mapping systems that downstream sensor fusion and path planning depend on. Responsibilities include designing spatial data structures (Entity Component Systems, spatial indexing, occupancy representations), building computational geometry and world-state pipelines, and optimizing performance for low-latency, high-throughput environments across air, ground, and maritime autonomy domains.
The ideal candidate has 2+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep expertise in spatial systems, world modeling, or simulation environments. You must be expert-level in C++ (C++20+), including template metaprogramming, move semantics, SIMD, and systems-level performance optimization. Hands-on experience building world or scene representations from game engines, simulation platforms, or autonomous systems is essential. Strong computational geometry background (coordinate transformations, spatial data structures like BVH/octrees/k-d trees, geometric algorithms, collision detection) is required.
Additional requirements: proficiency in Python and shell scripting, experience with agentic coding tools (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot), deep intuition for real-time software design, and willingness to travel up to 20% (approximately once monthly for up to one week). Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
Nice-to-have skills include Linux/Docker/C++ toolchains expertise, temporal reasoning and 4D scene representation, game development or simulation background, physics engines knowledge, and autonomous systems/robotics software architecture understanding. Applied Intuition is an in-office company expecting full-time employees to work from the Ann Arbor office 5 days per week, with flexibility for occasional remote work and schedule adjustments.
