Adyen is a global financial technology platform providing payments, data, and financial products for major customers including Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. The company is seeking Java Software Engineers and Senior Java Engineers to join their payments solution team in Amsterdam.
In this role, you will be responsible for the full development lifecycle—from software design through testing and production deployment—of high-performance, distributed payment processing systems. You'll work with one of the world's largest PostgreSQL databases, focusing on platform performance and reliability.
Key responsibilities include:
**Building the Global Payment Engine**: Design and implement integrations at scale for in-store and online payments. Connect to all major payment methods and card schemes (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc.) worldwide, removing integration complexity for merchants and partners. Create a highly available, scalable payment processing platform connecting to hundreds of external APIs. Automate core processes to match funds precisely at global scale.
**Delivering Industry-Leading User Experience**: Expand and modernize the merchant portal for external and internal users. Build foundational APIs and frameworks that enable platform growth. Develop new portal features, improve existing framework performance, and create automation APIs for self-service merchant enablement.
**Core Responsibilities**: Build and maintain distributed, high-performance platforms. Launch quickly and iterate often—your code will impact millions of businesses and shoppers within weeks. Take full ownership from initial design through production deployment. Identify and improve platform components for robustness and scalability. Collaborate across teams and time zones, participate in code reviews, and remain open to feedback.
Required qualifications: Experience with Java, web services, REST APIs, and SQL/PostgreSQL. Proven track record deploying high-throughput, highly reliable services. Proactive ownership mindset with focus on quality (technical and product). Excellent communication skills explaining complex concepts to non-technical audiences. Strong team collaboration and ability to evaluate technical tradeoffs. Nice-to-have: RabbitMQ, Kafka, Elasticsearch experience.
