OpenAI's Safety Systems organization is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Safety Engineering team, which builds platforms and tools ensuring OpenAI's models are safely deployed to benefit society. This role sits at the intersection of product engineering, data, and AI, directly shaping how millions of people experience OpenAI's technology. You will own end-to-end development of internal tools that improve model safety, with particular focus on vulnerable-user protections including mental health. Working closely with Safety Systems researchers, engineers, and policy creators, you'll translate workflows and pain points into durable product solutions. Your responsibilities include building full-stack experiences to support core model policy workflows such as data labeling, failure case analysis, and insight surfacing for iteration. You'll optimize internal applications for usability, speed, and scale to increase team velocity and reduce time-to-fix for safety issues. Additionally, you'll help transform successful AI-assisted safety workflows into external-facing products that empower developers to build safer AI systems. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of relevant engineering experience at tech and product-driven companies. Required technical skills include proficiency with JavaScript, React, and web technologies; at least one backend language (Python preferred); and experience with relational databases like Postgres or MySQL. An interest in AI/ML is valued, though direct experience is not required. You should thrive in iterative, fast-moving environments and be excited about partnering closely with researchers and policy writers to ship tools that directly improve model safety.
