Benchling is an AI platform for biotech R&D used by over 200,000 scientists globally, including major biopharma companies like Sanofi and Moderna. The Registry and Inventory team builds core products that provide scientists with conceptual and physical representations of research entities, standardized naming and identification systems, and materials tracking across containers and plates. These offerings are critical to enterprise customers and key initiatives like antibody discovery.
As a Senior Software Engineer on this full-stack team, you will drive complex end-to-end projects spanning React frontend and Python backend. You'll translate product requirements into scalable architecture and thoughtful user experiences, proactively identifying technical risks and tradeoffs. You'll shape the technical direction and architecture of the platform, making foundational engineering decisions that improve performance, reliability, and scalability while collaborating with other senior engineers on long-term strategy.
You'll work cross-functionally with product managers, designers, customer success, and other engineering teams to ensure alignment on goals and deep understanding of scientific user needs. You'll own proactive improvements to the codebase and infrastructure, refactoring critical systems for maintainability and performance while championing investments that improve developer velocity. Your focus on performance and scale will ensure systems handle the complexity of life sciences R&D, optimizing both backend performance and frontend responsiveness.
Mentoring is a key aspect of this role—you'll act as a technical mentor and sounding board for other engineers, helping grow the team's technical skills through guidance, pairing, and knowledge sharing. You'll elevate code quality and engineering practices by setting high standards for testing, documentation, and operational excellence, leading by example in code reviews. You'll operate effectively in a fast-paced environment with evolving scientific requirements, rapidly learning new technologies and helping the team do the same. Above all, you'll take ownership not just for your code but for the outcomes it enables, pushing for clarity and supporting others in doing the same.
