Forward Networks is seeking a Software Engineer to join the NQE (Network Query Engine) and Programming Languages team. This role focuses on developing a query engine for network data that enables non-programmers to express custom data views, reports, and verifications. The team also maintains domain-specific languages (DSLs) that power Forward's network verification and assurance platform.
You will work on challenging problems at the intersection of programming languages and database systems, including implementing cost-based query optimizers, designing extensions to pattern-matching languages, building bidirectional parsing systems, and collaborating with AI experts on natural language interfaces to DSLs.
Key responsibilities include developing and maintaining the codebase (primarily Java), enhancing NQE using PL and DBMS techniques, delivering a suite of domain-specific languages, and building supporting tools such as IDE plugins.
Required qualifications: BS in Computer Science or related field (MS preferred), 3+ years of professional experience with Java, Scala, or similar languages (C#, F#), and strong object-oriented design and development skills.
Nice-to-have skills include functional programming expertise (Scala, Haskell, OCaml, Scheme, F#), experience implementing programming language or DSL components (parsers, type checkers, compilers, static analysis, editor support), database system implementation experience (query parsing, optimization, execution pipelines, storage formats), familiarity with open-source data systems libraries (Apache Parquet, Iceberg, Datafusion), and JVM performance optimization expertise. Networking domain experience is a plus but not required.
