The Plugin Developer Platform team at OpenAI builds the APIs, SDKs, and tools that enable developers to extend ChatGPT and Codex. The team works on plugins, connectors, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and interactive apps, with a mission to make it easy for anyone to turn a useful workflow into a plugin, share it, and have others use it.
In this role, you'll be a platform-minded engineer responsible for designing and shipping developer-facing APIs, SDKs, and backend services. You'll own features end-to-end, from initial developer conversations through implementation and release. Your work will span developer-facing interfaces, APIs, and backend systems that power plugin creation, testing, publishing, and sharing across ChatGPT and Codex.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and shipping APIs, SDKs, and services that developers use to extend ChatGPT and Codex
- Making plugins easier to create, test, publish, update, and share
- Improving compatibility and consistency across ChatGPT and Codex, including interactive app experiences
- Contributing to MCP and other open standards, bringing practical developer needs into their design
- Working directly with developers and partners to understand recurring problems and improve the platform, tooling, and documentation
- Collaborating with Product, Research, Security, and Trust & Safety teams on permissions, compatibility, and safe execution
You should have experience building software that other developers use—whether through open-source projects, APIs/SDKs, developer platforms, internal tools, or devtools companies. You have strong opinions about API design and abstractions, enjoy engaging with developers to understand their needs, and can move fluidly between product strategy and technical implementation. You're comfortable working across web interfaces and backend systems, and you're interested in helping define how developers build software for AI agents.
The role is based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
