Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. The company delivers empirical Earth observation data via a cloud-based platform to commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. You will join the Mission Systems team, which builds and maintains Mission Control—a web-based application that empowers spacecraft operators and analysts to monitor, control, and study Planet's growing satellite fleet. This role involves working on distributed microservices that handle spacecraft scheduling, tasking, telemetry processing, and operational automation. Key responsibilities include: - Maintaining and augmenting automation and services responsible for satellite operations - Managing cloud-based infrastructure services (AWS/GCP) and associated tooling to meet internal needs and customer-facing SLAs - Evaluating and selecting appropriate software technologies - Designing and deploying critical infrastructure - Collaborating with cross-functional teams (Satellite Operations, Ground Operations, Pipeline, Product) to ensure the constellation meets mission needs - Contributing to a team that values open communication, collaboration, and self-directed problem-solving Required qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or similar - 4+ years of relevant work experience - Experience building services with cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP) - Infrastructure maintenance experience (Ansible, Kubernetes, Terraform) - Python programming proficiency - Relational database experience (Postgres, MySQL) - Strong attention to quality (automated testing, code review, documentation) - Experience with peer-reviewed code, CI/CD workflows (GitLab CI, Docker) - Proficient Linux skills - Self-starter mentality and cross-functional communication ability Desirable qualifications include API design experience, monitoring tools (Datadog, Sentry), microservice environments, and aerospace domain knowledge. This is a full-time remote position based in the US or Canada. If located near an office, hybrid work (3 days/week on-site) may be expected.
