Salary: USD 180,000 - 440,000 / annual

xAI is seeking a Software Engineer to build and maintain the core platform infrastructure powering their supercomputer network. This role focuses on systems-level work: developing a lean, high-reliability Linux-based operating system, writing high-performance device drivers to maximize hardware capability, and managing deployment and debugging in production environments. Key responsibilities include building the OS that underpins the supercomputer network fabric, developing device drivers for network and compute hardware, managing production deployment and operations, rigorous root-cause analysis of system anomalies, and improving observability and configuration management tools. You'll collaborate closely with hardware teams and external partners to design next-generation supercomputer hardware and bring up the OS and software stack on new platforms. The ideal candidate has hands-on systems programming experience in C or C++, strong operating systems fundamentals (scheduling, memory management, I/O), and deep understanding of computer networking at both the OS stack and network device levels. Preferred qualifications include deep Linux kernel knowledge, proficiency with debugging tools (ftrace, perf, Wireshark, eBPF, gdb), experience bringing up new hardware from scratch, demonstrated track record optimizing device drivers for high-speed interfaces with DMA and cache coherency considerations, understanding of peripheral hardware standards (Ethernet, PCIe, I2C, SPI), and experience with OS hardening and secure boot schemes. xAI operates with a flat organizational structure where all employees are hands-on contributors. The team is small, highly motivated, and focused on engineering excellence. Strong communication skills and the ability to work with curiosity and initiative are essential.
