Gusto is seeking a full-stack Software Engineer to join the People Technology team as the technical owner of PeopleOS, an AI-native internal HR platform serving 500,000+ small businesses. You will design, build, and ship software that shapes how Gusto's employees experience HR workflows—from recruiting and onboarding through performance management and offboarding. Day-to-day responsibilities include: **Product Engineering**: Own the technical architecture and implementation of PeopleOS, including the Offer Workflow Engine, People Home Base portal, Celebration tools, and automated Talk Track generation. Partner directly with People Ops stakeholders to translate business workflows into production software, managing design, implementation, UAT support, and releases. **Integration & Systems Development**: Design and maintain integrations across Workday, Greenhouse, Lattice, Slack, and Google Workspace. Build and maintain custom MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers that provide AI agents structured access to People Systems data where native tool MCPs don't exist. **AI-Powered Tooling**: Integrate Anthropic's Claude API to build intelligent internal tools including QPR coaching agents, HR chatbots, and ticket deflection workflows. Design prompts, handle structured outputs, and build safe, reliable AI-assisted workflows for People Ops use cases. **Collaboration & Quality**: Document integration specs and system configurations in Notion. Participate in Jira sprint planning and bi-weekly stakeholder demos. Troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions across the portfolio. Required qualifications: 3–5 years of full-stack software engineering with production-quality work in Python, TypeScript/Node.js, or both. Strong REST API experience (OAuth, rate limiting, pagination, error handling). Demonstrated ability to integrate SaaS platforms. Comfort with AI/LLM API integration (Claude, OpenAI, or equivalent). Experience shipping internal tools with real end users. Strong written communication and technical documentation skills. Understanding of HR data sensitivity and labor law implications. Preferred: MCP server architecture familiarity, HR Tech ecosystem experience (HRIS, ATS, LMS), background in People Ops or internal tools engineering at high-growth tech companies, XML/XSLT/JSON integration experience.
