Salary: USD 222,000 - 245,000 / annual
Gusto is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join the Payments platform team. The Payments organization handles all money management and movement operations across Gusto's suite of products, enabling safe transfers between employers, employees, government authorities, and partners. You'll be responsible for designing, building, and testing infrastructure that enables the Payments, Risk, and Product teams to build custom-tailored experiences for existing and emerging products.
In this role, you'll guide large technical architectural decisions focused on scale and modularity, help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and TypeScript/React applications in the world, and mentor fellow engineers. You'll collaborate with cross-functional teams including Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, and Operations to solve complex, ambiguous problems. The Payments team is completely re-architecting the payments platform to move money fast and at scale, so you'll be working on mission-critical infrastructure that powers multiple first and third-party products serving millions of businesses.
You should have 7+ years of experience building fault-tolerant, mission-critical software and designing distributed systems. Experience influencing and guiding multiple teams on scaling, refactoring, and optimizing legacy products is essential. You'll architect, build, and test large-scale production code that is maintainable, structured, and well-documented. Domain expertise in payments and/or accounting systems is highly preferred, and experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React is a bonus. You should be comfortable bringing clarity to complex problems and communicating technical complexity to facilitate informed tradeoffs.
