Atoms is building Physical AI—real-world robots for industries including food, mining, and transport. The company develops systems designed to understand, predict, and control real-world operations with precision, making complex physical operations more reliable, scalable, and productive. As a Software Engineer on the Onboard team, you will develop low-latency, deterministic C++ software that executes on vehicle edge compute to process data and control autonomous systems. Your responsibilities include designing and maintaining the high-performance messaging stack that routes data between modules, writing driver interfaces and safety monitors that interact directly with vehicle hardware, and building core system infrastructure including onboard data logging, time synchronization (PTP), memory management, and process lifecycle management. You will implement real-time diagnostics, watchdog timers, and redundancy logic to detect and recover from software or hardware faults during operation. You'll also maintain tooling for securely building, deploying, and updating OS and vehicle software images across the fleet. Required skills include proficiency with Python, C++, bash, git, Linux kernels, and Docker. You should be comfortable diagnosing issues via dmesg, kernel logs, and systemd (journalctl, unit/service management), with experience in inter-process communication, bus protocols, and various sensor interfaces (LiDAR, radar, cameras, IMU). Profiling, benchmarking, memory management, and networking utilities experience are essential. Strong communication and collaboration skills are required to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team. This is a full-time, in-office role based in San Francisco with a five-day-per-week onsite requirement. The company emphasizes doing best work together and is driven by invention and continuous change.
