Cloudflare is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Network Firewall team and help build next-generation network security capabilities on one of the world's largest edge networks. In this role, you will design and implement high-performance, distributed systems that power network firewall, DDoS mitigation, IDS/IPS, and related security products serving millions of internet properties globally.
You will work across the full stack—from low-level packet processing and Linux kernel networking (eBPF, netfilter, nftables) to high-level API design and distributed data pipelines. The role demands expertise in systems-level programming (Go, Rust preferred), deep knowledge of L2/L3/L4 networking protocols, and the ability to optimize for both throughput and latency in demanding edge environments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and shipping large-scale, reliable distributed systems that handle massive traffic volumes
- Developing high-performance network security products with strict latency and throughput SLAs
- Designing and integrating RESTful APIs and backend systems
- Implementing low-latency userspace packet processing solutions
- Collaborating with product managers and engineers to solve customer problems end-to-end
- Debugging, profiling, and optimizing performance-critical systems
- Working with large-scale distributed data pipelines for threat intelligence and analytics
Desirable experience includes building network firewalls, IDS/IPS systems, DDoS mitigation, rate limiting, or packet capture solutions. You should be comfortable owning solutions end-to-end, working across teams, and communicating clearly in both written and verbal formats. Cloudflare values builders who spot problems others have normalized and use modern tools (including AI) to ship solutions iteratively.
