Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. The company combines space hardware expertise with cloud-based data platforms serving commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors.
You'll join the Missions Software team, which builds and maintains Mission Control—a web-based application that empowers spacecraft operators and analysts to monitor, control, and study Planet's growing satellite fleet. The team also develops distributed microservices handling spacecraft scheduling, tasking, telemetry processing, and operational automation.
In this role, you will:
- Maintain and augment automation and services responsible for satellite operations
- Specify and implement new HTTP APIs and improve existing ones
- Evaluate and choose appropriate software technologies
- Design and deploy critical infrastructure
- Collaborate with teams across Satellite Operations, Ground Operations, Pipeline, and Product to ensure the constellation meets mission needs
- Work in a dynamic environment solving broad engineering problems
You bring a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or similar, plus 2–3 years of relevant work experience. Required skills include Python programming, API design, automated testing, code review, relational databases (Postgres, MySQL), CI/CD workflows (GitLab CI, Docker), and Linux proficiency. You're a self-starter who communicates clearly with cross-functional teams.
Stand-out qualifications include cloud infrastructure experience (AWS/GCP), infrastructure-as-code tools (Ansible, Kubernetes, Terraform), monitoring tools (Datadog, Sentry), microservice architecture experience, and aerospace domain knowledge.
This is a full-time remote position based in the US or Canada. If located near an office, you're expected to work on-site 3 days per week.
