Arista Networks is seeking a Senior Network Systems Software Engineer to design and build novel features for network hardware management. In this role, you will collaborate with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to develop software that controls hardware components on switches and routers—including temperature sensors, fan controllers, power controllers, storage devices, FPGAs, NICs, and PCIe switches.
You will architect abstractions that enable software to be packaged and integrated into hardware drivers managing all hardware components. You'll have opportunities to design solutions that accelerate key functions using hardware and FPGAs to improve system performance, and work closely with hardware engineers throughout the product lifecycle—from influencing hardware designs for software control to bringing new hardware to market.
Key responsibilities include:
- Interface with customers, product management, and hardware engineers to develop innovative network systems features
- Architect, design, and manage feature development
- Develop and maintain features using C, C++, and Python; review specifications and build automated tests
- Work with hardware and manufacturing teams to bring new hardware to market
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to design optimal software control interfaces
- Provide technical leadership across features, projects, and tools
- Work with Customer Support Engineers and customers to analyze and fix problems in production networks
- Mentor junior engineers in Arista's software development environment

REQUIREMENTS:
- BS/MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering plus 4+ years of experience
- Expert knowledge of C or C++ and Python
- Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
- Hands-on experience in hardware device driver design and development and/or system management utilities
- Understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems (preferred)
- Experience working with low-level hardware components (preferred)
- Applied understanding of software engineering principles
- Strong problem-solving and software troubleshooting skills
- Ability to design and implement features independently
- Ability to work in small teams
