Adyen is a global financial technology platform providing payments, data, and financial products for enterprise customers including Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. The company operates one of the largest PostgreSQL databases at scale and processes transactions for millions of businesses worldwide.
As a Java Software Engineer, you will own the full development lifecycle—from design through testing and post-deployment monitoring—for features released on a weekly cadence. You'll work on Adyen's distributed, high-performance platform, writing optimized SQL queries and building scalable backend services that directly impact global commerce.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and maintaining distributed, high-performance backend systems
- Designing and implementing new financial functionality end-to-end
- Writing testable, production-ready code in Java 17
- Optimizing database queries and API performance in a low-latency environment
- Collaborating across global teams, reviewing code, and iterating on feedback
- Improving platform robustness, scalability, and security for financial data processing
You'll work with a modern tech stack: Java 17, RESTful web services, PostgreSQL/CockroachDB, MyBatis ORM, Elasticsearch, Tomcat, and Gradle. The role emphasizes rapid iteration—you'll ship impactful code within your first weeks.
Ideal candidates have 5+ years of object-oriented programming experience (Java), strong ownership mindset, excellent communication skills, and the ability to articulate complex technical concepts. English proficiency is required; additional languages are valued in this global environment.
