Anthropic is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build infrastructure for its Interpretability team, which focuses on understanding how large language models work and ensuring they remain safe and beneficial. This is an early-stage role where you'll help define the charter of a new infrastructure effort within the Interpretability group.
You'll design and own shared infrastructure that enables researchers to safely access frontier models while maintaining security, privacy, and developer productivity. The work spans four key areas: (1) Security—designing secure-by-default environments and access patterns that improve both security posture and research velocity; (2) Privacy—building data-access patterns that ensure policy compliance as research moves from theory to practice; (3) Data & Compute Management—managing petabyte-scale research data and optimizing large accelerator fleet utilization through storage lifecycle management, capacity planning, and scheduling; (4) Developer Experience—building agentic engineering tools and observability systems that keep researchers moving fast.
You'll be embedded alongside Interpretability researchers to understand their workflows and workflows, while bridging communication with Anthropic's platform and security teams. Every hour of researcher friction you eliminate multiplies across the organization, and the infrastructure you build directly impacts the pace at which interpretability results inform real safety decisions.
Key responsibilities include designing and owning shared infrastructure for research environments, data systems, and compute tooling; leading cross-team efforts with agentic engineering, security, compute, and storage platform teams; discovering and resolving major developer experience issues; and helping transition interpretability methods from research code to dependable audit pipelines.
You should be highly proficient in at least one programming language (Python, Rust, Go, Java) with strong Python skills, and have significant experience building and operating secure, scalable software infrastructure including cloud systems and distributed systems.
