OpenAI's Infrastructure organization is hiring Software Engineers to build and maintain mission-critical distributed systems that power ChatGPT, the OpenAI API, and cutting-edge research. You'll join a collaborative team responsible for designing scalable, reliable infrastructure across multiple focus areas. Depending on your interests and background, you could specialize in Core Distributed Systems, Reliability Engineering, Observability, Developer Productivity, Cloud Infrastructure, or Databases. In all cases, you'll work closely with stakeholders to understand infrastructure, data, and compute needs while setting technical strategy that supports both research and product development. Key responsibilities include designing and maintaining reliable, performant systems used across engineering; collaborating with engineers, product managers, and researchers to build infrastructure meeting evolving needs; improving internal tooling, automation, and developer experience; and contributing to incident response, postmortems, and best practices around system reliability and scalability. You should have strong software engineering skills in Python, Go, C++, Rust, or similar languages, with experience designing, operating, or scaling distributed systems or developer infrastructure. Comfort with Linux environments, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and modern observability stacks is expected. You'll need to navigate complex systems, debug tricky issues, and communicate effectively across functional teams. The role requires 4+ years of relevant industry experience, with 2+ years leading large-scale, complex projects or teams as an engineer or tech lead. A passion for distributed systems at scale with focus on reliability, scalability, security, and continuous improvement is essential, along with excellent communication skills and ability to build consensus among stakeholders.
