Mercury is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Infrastructure team, which serves as an enablement lever for the entire engineering organization. The Infrastructure team builds scalable, secure, and maintainable foundations that enable product teams to ship rapidly while maintaining high standards of quality and observability.
In this role, you will help build out Mercury's Infrastructure Platform, focusing on making it easier for both human engineers and AI agents to deploy code safely and securely. You'll work across the full stack of infrastructure concerns—from networking to container orchestration—and partner closely with product teams to enable their AWS needs. The team emphasizes shipping often, maintaining systems thoughtfully, and filing off sharp edges without introducing unnecessary bureaucracy.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and expanding the Infrastructure Platform to support Mercury's growing engineering organization
- Designing systems that are AI-friendly while remaining usable and intuitive for human engineers
- Delivering key infrastructure projects, breaking down complex initiatives, and defining infrastructure strategy through detailed RFCs and technical specifications
- Contributing to cloud-native open-source technologies and helping product engineers understand production behavior
The infrastructure stack is primarily AWS-based (EC2, RDS, OpenSearch, ECS, EKS) with extensive use of Terraform for infrastructure-as-code, GitHub/GitHub Actions for CI/CD, and Prometheus, Grafana, OpenSearch, and OpenTelemetry for observability. The team is increasingly building agentic infrastructure—systems that allow AI agents to safely interact with infrastructure while maintaining appropriate guardrails.
Required qualifications:
- 2+ years of hands-on AWS experience
- Strong interest in cloud-native open-source technologies with willingness to contribute upstream
- Deep knowledge of low-level OS foundations (Linux, file systems, containers)
- Demonstrated ability in technical writing with 2+ years creating detailed technical documentation, RFCs, and tech specs
Ideal candidates will also have:
- Experience operating in regulated environments (HITRUST, SOC2)
- 2+ years working in large-scale Terraform environments with multiple contributors
- 2+ years of code-writing experience (the team is building the platform from scratch)
- Strong problem-solving mindset and willingness to tackle hard technical challenges
