Monzo is a digital bank on a mission to make money work for everyone, offering personal and business bank accounts, savings, investments, pensions, and credit products primarily in the UK with expansion plans. The company operates with over 650 engineers building an in-house banking platform across multiple business units (collectives) including Core Banking, Business Banking, Wealth, Borrowing, Growth, Payments, Platform, Fincrime, Security, and Expansion.
As a Backend Software Engineer III, you'll join a cross-functional squad collaborating with product managers, designers, mobile and web engineers, data analysts, and other specialists to build and support a specific part of Monzo's platform. Your work will span backend systems, distributed systems, resilient software architecture, and financial infrastructure. The role involves working on products customers use daily while dealing with the complexity of banking systems, payments, security, and financial crime prevention.
You should have strong experience building backend systems for technology products, ideally with exposure to distributed systems and strongly-typed languages (Go, Java, C, Scala, etc.). A product mindset is essential—you care about customer outcomes and make data-informed decisions. You're comfortable with ambiguity, enjoy learning new technologies, and are passionate about solving complex technical challenges in a regulated financial services environment.
Monzo values diverse backgrounds and does not require formal qualifications or degrees for engineering roles. The company contributes to open source and maintains a public engineering blog. The position is based in Barcelona with a hybrid model requiring 3 days per week in the office. Compensation includes base salary (dependent on experience), performance-based incentive awards, and benefits.
