Adyen is a financial technology platform providing payments, data, and financial products for major customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. The Software Engineer II role joins the nascent US Bank Accounts team, which is building products enabling businesses to open, manage, and move money directly within Adyen's ecosystem. As an early member of this team, you'll have significant influence over technical design, architecture, and roadmap decisions. You'll own projects from requirements through production launch, helping shape the team's culture and identity while partnering closely with engineering, product, and key stakeholders to translate complex banking needs into reliable, scalable customer experiences. Key responsibilities include working on complex technical projects across the full lifecycle (requirements, design, implementation, testing, production launch); contributing hands-on implementation while identifying opportunities to improve platform robustness and scalability; building APIs and tooling with emphasis on performance and code quality; and collaborating across teams and time zones. You'll launch features rapidly and iterate often—within your first few weeks, you'll deliver live functionalities impacting many merchants and shoppers. Required qualifications: 5+ years software development experience; strong Java expertise with Web Services, REST APIs, and SQL/PostgreSQL; familiarity with complex large-scale distributed systems; and full professional English proficiency. Experience with Kafka, Elasticsearch, customer developer experience (tooling/observability), or payment systems is a plus. The role is based in Chicago with an office-first culture requiring in-office presence at least 3 days per week on average. Adyen values diverse perspectives and creates an inclusive environment where people can be their authentic selves.
