Klaviyo is a leading marketing automation platform helping businesses deliver personalized customer experiences at scale. The Messaging Infra organization builds the backbone of Klaviyo's customer engagement platform, processing billions of messages across email, SMS, MMS, RCS, mobile push, WhatsApp, and other channels. In this role, you will design and build highly-available, low-latency, high-throughput event-driven services that power Klaviyo's real-time messaging pipeline. You'll work on systems processing hundreds of millions of messages daily, scaling toward billions, with a focus on reliability and performance. Key responsibilities include: - Building and scaling real-time messaging services that handle live events across multiple channels - Designing backend services for real-time traffic and asynchronous processing using queues, streams, and messaging systems - Contributing to highly-scalable, highly-available services, solving problems around throughput, latency, performance, and reliability - Collaborating with cross-functional teams on system designs and engineering practices - Mentoring other engineers and participating in technical interviews - Acting as a subject matter expert, continuously improving systems and leveling up peers You bring 4+ years of software engineering experience, with a track record of architecting and delivering at least one complex production system at scale. You have deep experience building online, real-time systems that process live requests, events, or messages, with strong understanding of latency, throughput, availability, and reliable processing. You're fluent in at least one backend language (Python, Go, Java, Scala, or similar) and comfortable navigating large, complex codebases. You have hands-on experience with event-driven or asynchronous architectures and streaming/message-queue platforms like Kafka, Pulsar, RabbitMQ, or SQS. You excel at diagnosing and solving performance and scalability issues, use data-driven approaches to improve products, and are familiar with system monitoring and alerting. You're passionate about mentoring teammates and raising engineering standards across the organization.
