New Relic is seeking a Software Engineer II to join the Service Architecture Intelligence team in Barcelona. This role focuses on building and maintaining distributed backend services that ingest large volumes of data, analyze spans and traces, and power the observability platform's UI experience.
You will work with a diverse tech stack including Java, Kafka, Redis, and public cloud services to solve complex distributed systems challenges at scale. The team is remote-first with strong Barcelona presence and regular office collaboration.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building, maintaining, and scaling backend services using modern engineering practices
- Pioneering and integrating AI agents and AI-powered workflows into engineering operations (code generation, testing, architecture planning, code reviews, troubleshooting)
- Collaborating with product teams to understand specifications and influence roadmap decisions
- Creating automation and tooling for scalability and deployment
- Working in an agile, DevOps environment with on-call rotation participation
- Championing continuous workflow innovation by evaluating emerging AI capabilities
- Contributing to a culture of technical excellence and shared knowledge
Required qualifications:
- Production experience with distributed systems, concurrency, and scaling
- Strong OOP language skills (Java required) with adaptability to other frameworks
- Familiarity with asynchronous programming (streams, event-based flows, task queues, message queues)
- Active experience using and mastering modern AI coding assistants and agents
- Comfort in fast-paced environments delivering high-quality code on regular cadence
- Collaborative work style with shared code ownership mindset
- Adaptability and proactive drive to push boundaries of modern software tools
- English proficiency
Bonus experience includes custom agentic AI tool development, open source contributions, build/test automation expertise, observability tools setup, and technical mentorship.
